Getting it out of my head and onto the page

Apparently drinking scotch and talking philosophy before bed results in having philosophical discussions with yourself.

I was dreaming about some sort of international conclave, mostly Brits and Europeans but some Americans (enough that I was there, anyway). There was a fair lot of sociopolitical theory flying about, but the biggest point that made me wake up and want to write about it was this:
"Civic holidays like "Memorial Day" are a surcease, designed to provide an outlet for the masses to prevent them from building up enough steam to revolt or riot."

What do you think? Seemed fitting for this Friday, albeit awfully content-filled (potentially)...

Mondays are for writin'

My dreams have been weird with a capital Q lately. My brain is only half-on as a result, so today you get links of a literary nature (basically).

Point the first: Obama, McCain, Clinton, and Kucinich go to a Convention of a different sort. Hilarity ensues.

Secondly, if you don't have time to read comic books (what are you doing on LJ, then?), here's a helpful set of one-sentence summaries, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jackbabalon23.

And finally, Elizabeth Bear linked to a publisher's blogpost about why your favorite new book may not be at your brick-and-mortar store. Interesting stuff there, especially if you're an author-in-aspiration.

Shiny!

Barack Obama has bought virtual billboards. Again, this is a guy who gets the 21st Century. ::edit:: PDF link, if you're using a Mac or other instrument where that page won't load.

Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, who is my favorite author today... although damnit, I just picked up (another) unfinished series. At least zie's young. :P

Pithy is for Sithies.

I don't have any commentary on the VP debate last night. I was instead out listening to Slayer, speaking at an AoG church, speeding, folding newsletters, eating dinner, kicking my fiancée's ass at pool, and having sex. It's an exciting, fun-filled life I lead.

I might watch it on the retreads, but for right now I'm enjoying other people's interpretations of it. And I'm just pleased Biden didn't catch a fatal case of Foot-in-Mouth disease.

For now, though, that meme:
In honor of Sarah Palin's having been stumped by Katie Couric when she asked the Vice Presidential candidate to name any Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade, we have a meme. The Rules: post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your LJ. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) Pass on the educational fun!

Since Palin was actually asked to name a case she disagreed with, how about... oh, I dunno, Dred Scott (not really a person)? Bush v. Gore (nuff said)? Roth v. United States (obscene material is still not protected speech)? I had to look up the case name on the last one, but I remember looking that one up offline before there was a World Wide Web...

Three things unlike each other:

  1. Someone has borrowed my Path of Daggers book, I just realized when I wanted to look something up yesterday. Anyone want to fess up/return it? I have a couple of suspects based on who has been reading RJ lately, but I'll not name names, since I didn't even remember loaning it out.
  2. Tuesday is Celebrate Bisexuality Day. I have no idea as yet what I'll be doing to observe that lil' holiday, seeing as I have a orgy meeting at my house that evening. Suggestions welcome.
  3. Speaking of suggestions, one of my bumper stickers is dying the final, sun-baked death. It's the "Freedom of Religion Means Any Religion" one, which now looks more like:
    Images behind cut )
Ideas for a replacement? I'm contemplating getting an Obama sticker, but we're not supposed to be campaigning on the job, and sometimes I need to take my car to work events. Other strong possibilities would be a Gaia Community bumper sticker, or one of the random belligerent Celt stickers we have rattling around the house...

This Am Bizarro-Election!

  • The Democrats have more money.
  • The Republicans are off-message.
  • The party in power didn't properly vett their VP candidate (seriously, the only other options I can see are that they forgot how the Internet works, or they don't care because they've rigged the game entirely).
  • The potential Dominionist-in-Chief is a woman.
  • The Democrats are taking the high ground with respect to family values.
  • A confirmed VP candidate isn't going to be ready to meet the press for another two weeks, almost a quarter of the remaining election cycle.
Seriously, what the hell, kids?

Finally, I'd like to nominate John Stewart for White House Press Secretary, whichever party wins.

He UNDERSTANDS how the media works!

And we wonder why they didn't accept us as liberators...

This morning on the way in to work I saw the following, just besides the "Sempter Fi" bumper sticker (among others):

What are you doing June 7th?

June 7th, 2008 marks the 43rd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Griswold v. Connecticut. The American Life League/STOPP International is planning "Protest the Pill Day '08" as a response, mostly centered around Planned Parenthood clinics that provide the pill (I guess organizing enough people to block all the CVS/Osco/whatever would have been too tough).

Anybody feel like mounting a counterprotest? The only nearby clinic that has a registered protest so far is the Overland Park location (supposedly starting at 6:45AM), but keep an eye on Missouri or whatever state you happen to live in, if you're reading from farther afield. Look for the locations with a black dot in the map marker.

Reminders

1) If you live in Missouri (or are a Democrat in Kansas), tomorrow is voting day. Go vote before work/in the morning/on your lunch hour. Whenever you do it, vote. No bitching for the next 2-8 years if you don't, kids. (Kansas Republicans caucus next Saturday; Kansas Democrats caucus tomorrow night)

2) I say to vote early in the day, because that evening is [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants' birthday shindig. Dinner is at Matsu Japanese Restaurant in Westport (Westport KCMO, not Connecticut) at 6:30 or so, to give us enough time to eat before the Flogging Molly show at the Beaumont Club at 8. Word is that there are still tickets available for Flogging Molly, last I checked: $22 at the box office, $22+exorbitant fees through Ticketmaster.

Of course, if you're not going out with us, you can vote until 7. But vote. Please?

P.S. If you haven't RSVPed to [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale already about dinner, please do so here so we can give Matsu a headcount. They're not a super-large restaurant...

Interesting little bit of Freedom of Information data going on here, if you haven't seen it yet:
Fundrace 2008 - the graph for eastern KCMO is unsurprising, but depressingly empty.

Vote: None of the Above

SelectSmart has a new presidential candidate chooser; I think I liked their last one better, but maybe it's just early.

Still, it gives me something to start with, at least: )

::edit:: Of course, I'd have to take all of them to find out where I really stand, or maybe I could just do some research on my own....nah, didn't think so. Not when I have the Internet to do my thinking for me!

::second edit:: Here's another one, with (of course) vastly different results: )

Or this one, from the VA's website: )

I can't even describe how this came to my attention...

Except to say that it started with Monte Cook and Scrappy Doo, and ended up with a U.S. Appeals Court case being redacted: What. The. FUCK?

This is a very interesting essay, though I suspect I'm linking it for very different reasons than many people 'round these parts: The terrible secret of LiveJournal.

What Transpires Forthwith? Obviously, Mangled Genius.

Interesting article on the state of the Information Technology industry, linked to by the clever bunny known as [livejournal.com profile] ysabel: What Could Be Worse Than Failure?

In mostly unrelated news, I think I did better on picking winners in Tuesday's city primary than I have in any election a very long time. My choices didn't advance to the March runoff election in the 3rd and 4th District-At-Large positions, but the rest did well, and my top two candidates will be in the mayoral runoff, which pleases me. Even if I am trying really hard to catch the crud today, and may very well be staying home tomorrow to save energy for the weekend.

Also, mith has declared March to be International Mafia Month; thought you should know.
