So after 3 years, I bit the bullet and finally installed Windows on my machine. The reason is simple: you can *either* run a clean Linux system with all open source software, *or* a system that will run commercial software on a Windows/Linux dual-boot setup. The reasons for this are more numerous than I want to get into, so I will suffice to say that I have learned :
  • Windows has to go on first, then Linux. It's picky that way (Windows is; Linux doesn't care).
  • I should have done this before I reinstalled Mandrake Linux 10 last week, but nevermind...
  • Linux does a better job of finding drivers that will work than Windows (which is one reason I'm writing this from Linux, not Windows, which can't recognize my Internet connection yet).
  • Processors work better when the fan is plugged into the power source.
  • The value of a good heat sink and a low-load operating system is *not* to be overrated.
  • Real gaming potential is at hand. Fear my reduced productivity (and hopefully, stress level)!
  • In other news, my mail from the last 3 years did not make the transition successfully, so anything I had before Saturday that I haven't responded to, is gone.. Sorry.

Off to go fsck with it some more...

I say again...

I have got to introduce you to my Linux-geek boyfriend. He likes to talk about Linux and computers and I just smile and nod.

Wow!

That would be fantastic actually...I've got a few friends who dabble in Linux but don't really know any more than I do, and a few friends who are tech enough to know about generalized computer-fu but not Linux specifically, so locally I'm sort of bereft of that.

If you want to send him my info, please do, or at such time as we ever get that chance to meet you, that would work too. Thanks!

I will tell Dave that I have crossed paths with another penguin-ite. He will tell you that he is no expert on Linux, but that he prefers it to Windows and uses a dual-boot system, too. I'll coax him into a play date soon because he's sort of shy. Sigh. Chris Rock is right.

Dunno if it'll help that I'm a penguinista named David, but you can try it...

So what did Chris Rock say?

In his last HBO special, Chris Rock talked about marriage and how wives treat their husbands. He said that the women get together with their friends and take their husbands along like they're being set up on play dates. "You like baseball (Linux) and so and so's husband likes baseball (Linux). You'll have lots to talk about!"
