Bill Gates can bite my fileserver
Jan. 2nd, 2005 10:43 pmSo after 3 years, I bit the bullet and finally installed Windows on my machine. The reason is simple: you can *either* run a clean Linux system with all open source software, *or* a system that will run commercial software on a Windows/Linux dual-boot setup. The reasons for this are more numerous than I want to get into, so I will suffice to say that I have learned :
Off to go fsck with it some more...
- Windows has to go on first, then Linux. It's picky that way (Windows is; Linux doesn't care).
- I should have done this before I reinstalled Mandrake Linux 10 last week, but nevermind...
- Linux does a better job of finding drivers that will work than Windows (which is one reason I'm writing this from Linux, not Windows, which can't recognize my Internet connection yet).
- Processors work better when the fan is plugged into the power source.
- The value of a good heat sink and a low-load operating system is *not* to be overrated.
- Real gaming potential is at hand. Fear my reduced productivity (and hopefully, stress level)!
- In other news, my mail from the last 3 years did not make the transition successfully, so anything I had before Saturday that I haven't responded to, is gone.. Sorry.
