They apparently know why cranberry juice is good for UTIs: a sugar called D-mannose.

If true, this is some truly awe-inspiring stuff. Instead of killing your natural flora or breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria, this sugar 'entices' E.coli out of your urinary tract and lets it be flushed out of your system, in just a day or two.

It also works by not allowing the bacteria to attach to the wall of the bladder...

Hi

I'm originally from Maine and used to work for an ad agency that represented the Maine Wild Blueberry Association -- turns out wild blueberries (specifically wild -- not cultivated) have the same health benefits as cranberries. They are a nice alternative for people who aren't partial to the "tartness" of cranberries.

Urinary Tract Health

Blueberries and cranberries prevent infection

According to research findings at the Rutgers Blueberry Cranberry Research Center in Chatsworth, N.J., blueberries help promote urinary tract health. Explains Rutgers scientist Amy Howell, Ph.D, blueberries, like cranberries, contain compounds that prevent the bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections from attaching to the bladder wall.

Interesting, no?
