[livejournal.com profile] druidevo brought this to my attention, so I tracked down the original story:

Liberal elite Mister Colonel David Hackworth (Ret.) writes:
"Rumsfeld’s obsession with machines and their efficiency has translated into his using one to replace his own John Hancock on KIA (killed in action) letters to parents and spouses. Two Pentagon-based colonels, who’ve both insisted on anonymity to protect their careers, have indignantly reported that the SecDef has relinquished this sacred duty to a signature device rather than signing the sad documents himself."

Although understandably difficult to corroborate, there's additional evidence to lead one to believe that President Bush isn't hand-signing his letters to the relatives of fallen soldiers either.

What the blue, melting fuck? It's not enough to persuade a country to go to war on flimsy pretenses, you can't even have the decency to get personally involved in counting the cost, or comforting the afflicted??

It's days like this that make me pleased I live where I rarely have to see these individuals, face-to-face. I might be inclined to do something...personal.
