Had a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] zylch the other day about catharsis and releasing tension. Video games were the subject of the moment, but she said they didn't work for her; 'real' violence had to be involved, such as breaking dishes.

Video games work to an extent for me, and nothing beats a real good workout or 'wrestling session' (of any sort). But my drive home today reminded me of another one: really loud music. My radio graciously obliged the Friday commute with a helpful dose of raucous rock.

Recent Music:
Nickelback, Figured You Out
Linkin Park, Numb
Metallica, Memory Remains
Seether, Gasoline

Throwing knives works for me. I have a nice thick target out back that gets a lot of abuse when I've had a bad day.

I've never had a safe space to try throwing knives, but darts work alright in a pinch and archery does wonders for chilling me out. Breaking things just releases energy; shooting things makes me channel it. Unfortunately I haven't had access to an archery range for quite a while now :-(

Shawnee Mission park has (or at least had, I haven't checked it out in a few years) an archery range ... if you were coming by the residence of [livejournal.com profile] chaosdruid for some reason, you might want to check it out.

That's the same park where PPD was, yes?

Yep, it's 1/4 mi east of 87th lane; so very easy to get to from my house.
I even took a nice meandering drive through there yesterday myself.

Mmmmm, and a year-long permit costs only $15. Now all I have to do is acquire a bow and some arrows, and I'll be all set.

You are always welcome to use the big wooden target here if the need arises. The neighbors have given up thinking of me as normal a long time ago, so my friends should frighten them just as much as I do.

Hmmm ... does that mean I could do kata with live steel in the yard? Or do you think that would be taking it too far? I haven't accidentally killed anyone yet ...

why not?

We've worked up demo sword fights out back before. It only scared the guy that was painting the ceilings here a little bit...

Well, I'm sure sensei would have many good reasons "why not", all of which are valid ... but I've always had more fun with a tachi in hand than a boken. There's probably a character flaw in there somewhere.

the swordsmith I used to work for had a very good reason for using live steel: one generally pays a hell of a lot more attention to what one is doing if one could cause serious damage by doing it incorrectly.
