Repeat or Replay?
Jul. 28th, 2005 06:55 amObviously it'll be a little hard to tell, but if anyone knows if I'm somehow specifically pulling this dream from an external source, I'd be very grateful. You see, I've had, with minor differences, the exact same dream, several years ago.
The primary point of the dream seems to involve the blurring of lines between fantasy and reality. It starts with me playing a D&D-like game (Gauntlet, maybe, except I haven't played that in years) with a small group of friends - 4, possibly? - and then the game becoming real. There's a much larger group of OTHER gamers at the door in a lynch-mob mood, because they're after our Amazon. Not sure if it's for sexual purposes, as she's the fairest of us all, or some game-plot reason.
In any case, it comes to pass that our group is competent and theirs...not so much. What follows is a broad series of Army of Dead-style physical humor/horror bits, wherein we lead our hapless foes into an onslaught of arrows, draw them into the house one by one for 'autographs' or some similarly inane pretext, and generally decimate their numbers. By the end of the 'battle' (slaughter might be a better word for it), there ends up being just two of us, me and the Amazon, huddled under the dining room table as the lynch mob decides to quietly fade away. They don't know our numbers are reduced too, and they've apparently decided She's Not Worth It. We come out from hiding and decide to do something involving less swords and sorcery... (no, not that... I mean like put together a puzzle).
Almost scene for scene, that seems to be a repeat of a dream I had a half-dozen years ago, maybe even a decade. The only major difference seems to be that this time the initial game involved somehow creating a tile 'gameboard' that became more photorealistic as the game became real, but I *know* where that part came from: playing Civilization II again lately, and designing scenarios for it. But the thought occurs to me that if I'm replaying the same scenes, maybe they're not my scenes... maybe I'm remembering a book or movie or something.
Anyway, thought it couldn't hurt to ask...

Date: 2005-07-28 03:05 pm (UTC)The story doesn't ring any resemblances for me, and I'm usually really good at pulling out themes and similarities. I do, however, fear hordes of gamers at the door. I think that part's archetypal.
