The bad news is, our house hit a power surge last night and knocked all three computers into a sudden reboot (yeah, we should probably invest in a UPS). Two of them came back up normally; mine went into a kernel panic. Not sure exactly what happened, but the best guess seems to be that the partition table got corrupted (best case), or the data is scrambled (worse case). Sometime this week I'll fix it (probably), but work and other things are still very busy, so I may be a little slow in responding. LJ may be your best bet for finding me.

The good news is, I needed to reinstall anyway. Something went wonky in my upgrade/install this winter, and in order to get Windows and Linux playing nice together on the same computer, I was going to have to start over anyway. Also, I need to replace my video card. I still have my backups from ~4 months ago, and not a WHOLE lot has changed on my HD since then. I will lose a bunch of email, but thankfully the bulk of the Treasurer information wasn't on this computer. Yet another reason to store information online, and in multiple places...

[livejournal.com profile] druidevo, do you still have my mandrake 10.1 CDs?

Soon as is convenient to you...but I won't be home until ~8pm, so not too soon. :)

Did you get Mandrake...sorry, Mandriva up and running?

Well, what happened was in Jan/Feb I got tired of not being able to play computer games with my other thirds, and having a 2-year-out-of-date Operating System, so I backed up my data, wiped the HD, and installed Linux and Windows both on there as a dual-boot. However because of the order/setup I chose, Windows wouldn't boot. Linux was unaffected and ran 85% fine, which gave me time to research the problem. By the time I figured out what I'd done wrong, I'd been using my computer long enough again that inertia had set in, and I never got around to reformatting/reinstalling again.

This time, Windows goes on first (after I swap out my graphics card), *then* Linux, and then it should all work fine...

We got you a new card, right? Why didn't it go in then?

Inertia, for one. After I got it, I wasn't sure it would be compatible after all, and since I'd have to shut down the computer to install it (and possibly get new drivers), I'd just do it at the same time as the re-reinstall.

And then life happened (noticing a pattern?)...

Hmm...

My laptop has been on the fritz this past weekend too. Grr. I wonder what Mercury (no, not Freddy) is up to.

A UPS.

A UPS. As in one?

We have, let's see... the 1400VA rack mount UPS downstairs, plus another big APC down there. My machine, Kit's machines and Joel's machine are all on UPSes, plus the upstairs switch has its own. Plus Kit has one upstairs. So...at least seven in use at the moment. (Amy's machine is a laptop, so it doesn't really need one, just a good surge protector.)

Not counting the spares.

Ehhhh. We don't run any servers or 24-hour stuff out of our home, but I am coming to realize that somewhere along the line, KCP&L's power supply to us is pretty variable. We get a surge that flips the computers off about once every 4-5 weeks, in my experience. I'm less concerned about lightning strikes than that variability, but we've never had to mess with power conditioning before. Got any references/recommendations?
