Friday would have been Sigmund Freud's 149th birthday, so a bunch of us thought it would clever/funny to dress up as the good doctor (or our favorite neuroses) and go to The Cigar Box, a restaurant in town that is conveniently located immediately next to a strip club (and is actually tasty). Actually more of us thought it would be funny than I expected, so eventually 12 of us traipsed in, most ordering ... wait for it... Coke.

Dinner was very good ([livejournal.com profile] chaosdruid has some of the analysis pictures we drew while we were there), but cover charge at Temptations was prohibitive, so we thought it a better plan to acquire porn and drink at reasonable prices, and go back to our place to "analyze" both. The drink turned out to be good, mostly, and the porn bad, partially. The second of three videos was much better than the first (which should have been excellent, since it was called "Sexual Analysis", but we were all snarking at it so much that we probably missed the point... in any case, a good time was had by all. I think [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants has a better synopsis than I, and a link to the video that was worth something. Door #3 remains unexplored...

Saturday, I had to get up at some godawful hour and attend what was nominally billed as a community forum on domestic violence, but turned out to mostly be about the breaking news about the discovery of the identity of "Precious Doe" - a 4-year-old girl whose body was found, decapitated, in a wooded area of KCMO about four years ago. I'm glad that her story can finally be told and that her parents might be brought to justice (they confessed when they were confronted in Oklahoma), but after three more hours of this (on top of all the media coverage), I was sufficiently crispy on the idea that I decided to skip the memorial service scheduled for 2pm, and go home to salvage the remainder of my weekend.

Saturday afternoon we went to go see The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was much better than we feared. For me, Zaphod Beeblebrox was everything that arrogant, oblivious, charming, smarmy SOB should have been; I don't know what people were complaining about with him. They had to cut 60% of the Guide entries (which are 60% of the fun of the book), which was a shame, but what they left in was done well. Mos Def was, surprisingly, pitch-perfect as Ford Prefect. Slartibartfast was a pleasure, as always, and I think I'll stop there for people who haven't seen it...

Sunday started with my trademark once-a-weekend-breakfast. This week, it was vanilla-cinnamon-nutmeg-clove pancakes and hickory-smoked bacon, which would have gone a damn sight smoother if I'd remembered to check if we were out of eggs before I started cooking the bacon. Oops. All's well that ends well, though, and we ate before noon.

The not-Mother's-Day ritual at Gaia was extremely well done, but I was so tired/slightly out of sorts by then, so I had a hard time getting into it...and not because it was about the Five-Ford Goddess. I was waffling between leaving the room to stop detracting (several people came over and checked on me during the dancing, when I was sitting it out), but ended up staying because I wanted to see [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale's solo. I was not disappointed. The entire team put on a hell of a show; sorry for being a wet blanket, guys.

Afterward, there was a general call for "Food!" (an hour-plus of dancing will do that to some people), so we attempted to go to Chili's. Unfortunately, some of us forgot it was Mother's Day, so the restaurant was a) packed, and b) the 7 of us waited a very long 10-15 minutes to be seated...more like 40 minutes, actually. Luckily, we got a waiter who had served us before and was *very* understanding of his charges plague of locusts customers' demands for multiple appetizers and lots of wet drinks. I believe he was tipped better by us than anyone else there that night, I hope.

Got up this morning after another short-night's sleep, and was moving sloooow. Got to the office a few minutes late and got settled just soon enough to have to go pick up my boss from City Hall for the HOACPA picnic at 11 - except we forgot to pick up a dessert item for the meeting. So down to Sun Fresh, then up to Farley MO (and then further north, to the farm it was being held at). Beautiful scenery, but we were about a half-hour late after all of that. I thought I was going to be late for my own election as the organization's Vice-President (I was nominated to the low-impact position last month), but that fear turned out to be unfounded. Instead, I was knocked out of the running even before the run-off (being the lowest-impact position, it was the only one that was contested, with three nominees). So a relief on one hand, because it means less responsibilities...but it also means the organization still has an all-sworn-officer board. Since most of the members are sworn peace officers, this sort of thing isn't entirely surprising, and I like the guy who got the job, don't get me wrong... but there's still a thin blue line separating the two groups. Oh well.

This was further compounded by my boss's insistence (at her boss' insistence) that we work on the neighborhood tour, again, on the way back. This entailed driving over half of this HUGE city, finally getting the details laid out, and then going back to my office, and then back to City Hall so I could finish the documentation for the tour. I left CH about 5:55...only 25 minutes late today, and not because I forgot to go home, this time. I wanted to, really. *headdesk*

However, on the plus side, I am home, now, with my family, and several shiny new icons, courtesy of my friends' advice in a post a few weeks ago. And smoked ribs. Whee.

You weren't a wet blanket at all. I just figured you weren't into the dancing, that's all, which was fine by me. I checked in with just about everybody at one point or another -- whether they were on the sidelines or not. I think Princess Boredom appreciated having somebody safe and quiet to go sit by...so I'm glad you were there to facilitate that for her, whether you'd intended to or not.

You're very kind to say so; I'm glad I wasn't impinging on the ritual too much.

I am not a nice person, remember? You *know* I usually will not say things just to be kind. Glad I could reassure you, in any case.

:grumbling about people ruining my image with all this talk of kindness and romanticism::
