You Are 31 Years Old

31

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.
13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.
20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.
30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!
40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

In other news, I finally went to fencing practice on Wednesday; mind you, I've been *thinking* about doing this since I was a kid in San Antonio and the college-age crew boss on my newspaper-subscription route told me I should try it, as I was "built for it" (strong legs, light upper body). And you know, it's swords! But the fencing club at OU (different OU, [livejournal.com profile] chronarchy) had shut down for lack of interest before I got there, and didn't really start back up until after I left. Then it got set on the back burner until Five Rings fencing and the new Calontir Fencing interest group started up, so the other day I went with [livejournal.com profile] druidevo and [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale. Definitely interesting, and something I want to look at, whether or not it becomes a long-term hobby. It pretty much fit my expectations of what it would be, and as an added bonus, I learned a new way to scare animals and small children (to wit, advancing down the hall behind them in fencing posture, as opposed to my usual Muppet Attack™).

We'll see.

RAWR! I was delighted that you came to fencing! It seems to put you in an exceedingly agreeable mood. Maybe. You should repeat the experiment and see.

Er. And:

Yeah, it was a good time, and I had to restrain myself from practicing footwork while I was waiting for my boss to get out of a meeting today...

Definitely need to collect more data!

I have to admit I've never fenced that crew, apparently for obvious reasons :)

Pity that it got shut down. The Big Ten has been trying to shut down fencing here for years. They've suceeded in many schools. And Title IX gave them half the reason, too: Title IX a double-edged sword, powerful and just when weilded by a good person, and terrible and swift when held by those with money on their minds.

Title IX

You don't have male and female fencers there? Or is it the "we can't support small sports AND pay for women's sports" ploy?

I'm confused, but then being in the SCA and knowing [livejournal.com profile] saffronhare, I'm used to seeing male and female fencers together, so maybe I'm missing something basic. I probably need to compare and contrast the two rulesets; I suspect SCA-fighting is more similar to épée in target and right-of-way guidelines than classical foil...

It's the, "Let's get an equal number of women student athletes and male student athletes by elimininating men's sports" ploy. The ideal option is to add more women's sports, but it's very rare that such things happen. That's the main reason I support OSU's football program: So long as it rakes in the money, our women's and men's sports are safe.

There are actually lots of colleges that have a women's fencing team, but no men's fencing team because of Title IX. Heck, we couldn't get a men's scholarship for fencing, but we had 5 women's scholoarships.

In olympic fencing, the men never compete with the women. This is a good thing: I've had several women kick my ass, and my parents have never let me forget it :)

And, yeah, SCA is very different from olympic. I prefer olympic any day of the week. I tend to find it much more beautiful.

Nice. . .
