So I woke up Monday morning with a marvelous case of the two-cycle flu: one stroke goes up and out, the other goes down and out...ugh. Needless to say, it took almost no prompting for me to call in sick and crawl back into bed for a while. I then proceeded to lounge about the house (how weird!?!) all day, and eventually ate some generally white food and limped my way to a grove meeting in the evening (okay, so
featherynscale drove us...it didn't take a whole lot of effort on my part, except for the getting dressed thing). I ate some more white food there (albeit cheesecake), and some hot tea, and that seemed to go okay.
Stayed up far too late that evening on account of sleeping and puttering all day, and decided Tuesday morning that I'd call in despite having no visible symptoms (that's a first for me, kids!), and play it safe. I still hadn't actually seen evidence of my gastrointestinal system proving that it was up to the challenge, for one thing. Although as my other thirds pointed out, I did a sort of massive system purge on Monday morning and had eaten hardly anything that day, so it wasn't entirely surprising.
Stayed up late dealing with Fresh Penguin Hell™ in the form of a computer that decided to revamp my entire XWindows settings based on me shutting it off, taking out the video card, and putting it back in. That's all I did; as a result I had to deal with new and exciting default sounds, a changed resolution, and the desktop and menu settings I had maybe...2 1/2 years ago? Perhaps shortly before Nunya helped me install Mandrake 8.2... so instead of playing more Diablo II, I got that working again. Side benefits include a working terminal/console screen again, and improved monitor resolution.
It even survived Wednesday's unexpected excitement: 3-4" of snow and an unexpected power outage. Woke up for work at 10:30am, read the clock as saying 2:17, and promptly Freaked Right Out. It was plausible, you see, since I had gone to sleep around 4:50am, that I had slept until afternoon. This would be decidedly double-plus ungood, since the annual performance review that I had scheduled for Monday before I got sick had been pushed back to Wednesday. Missing work on your review date is a bad sign...thankfully it was merely reporting that it had been 2h17m since the power came back on. I cleared off the cars, judged the driveway slushy enough to not need shoveling, and took a shower and scooted down to work.
The upshot of all of this? I've decided one of the things I'm getting for my birthday is probably new computer parts and Mandrake 10.1, and my boss decided that my performance has been solid enough in her view to give me 2-step performance raise. There's also another (official) day off tomorrow, a good possibility of snowmen in the near future, hot cocoa, and three-player Diablo II. Whee!
