So last night I got to have a new repeating dream, that seems to be showing up over the last week or so. It's just bizarre, though, because it's only a snippet (that I remember, of course) of an apparent fertility rite.

Mainly, it involves a woman (can't tell who, despite the Live and In Living Color point-of-view) being penetrated by a stylized penis-shaped candle, which is then taken out and the wick at the 'tip' being lit, which is about the point where I either wake up or the dream fades from memory. Just that same scene, a good half-dozen times in the last week probably.

And of course, it's made all the more improbable by the fact that a) not many women I know (and none I'd expect to be performing this rite with) want more children, b) the candle would probably melt/severely deform from the body heat, and c) it would be damn hard to light at that exact moment, I'd think.

Just plain weird, but there it is, and it goes in the file. And, I suppose, if anybody's in need of a good fertility rite, have at it...

I tend to put whatever my current 'ear worm' is, since I don't listen to music at work and rarely at home when I'm typing, but that was what was playing in the car on the way to work...

For what it's worth, the symology leads me to think that the dream is less about fertility and more about sex. Fertility stuff tends to focus more on bellies and boobs. Flaming beavers are more overtly sexual...that, or warnings about venereal disease.

But that's just my $.02 and I'm due to be mistaken about something any minute now.

No, no real shock or terror about the dream, it's just a "what the...? okay..."

You're probably right that it has more to do with sex... and of course you knew this, but nothing got set on fire except the candle, and that was after it was well away from her body. Whoever she is, she seemed to be enjoying herself, not scared..

From my perspective, if this were a rite that I was performing, the intent would likely be to secure sex for a man not present. Often, the magical significance of burning a candle is a continuation of energy already "programmed" into the candle. In this case, you're anointing the candle with something pretty specific and then lighting it away from the body. In my world, the candle would have been linked with the man prior to this part of the rite. He would be symbolically getting sex in the ritual, and then the candle would be burned to reinforce that event.

Alternately, it might be a sex-attracting ritual for the woman - same justification, but without a link to a specific man. (Although, I think that if you could find someone to do this kind of rite for you, you wouldn't have to look that hard for a sex partner, but maybe I'm wrong.)

If it had been that the candle came out of her on fire, then I would go for disease as a possible interpretation, but the lighting is a seperate act.

Or it could be a subconscious drive for more hot wax play. *shrug* Hard to say.

I'd guess the wick would have no problem being lit, actually, as wicks are thoroughly "impregnated" with wax and therefore do not readily become damp, even if the woman in question does.

I had one about you a week or so ago.

You (and kittenpants and featherynscale) were living in New York City (New York City?!?). I had decided to visit (whether it was announced or pop-in I'm not sure) but you were the only one home. I was in your bedroom (fully clothed even!) when one of your girls came home (dunno which). You spent the remainder of the dream trying to keep her out of the bedroom and discovering me.

It was tres weird when I woke up.

However, It's Also Been My Experience That With Dreams, Its Less About Interpreting What Is Seen, And More About Figuring Out What Caused You To See It.

In Otherwords, If When Your Exposed To The Concept Of 'Fertility', Do You Get Images In Your Head Of Stuff Being Inserted Into Women? If Not 'Fertility', Then What Would Make You Think Of It? (Cleansing? General Horniness? Your Mother?) I Like To Backtrack My Dreams That Way.

Hmmm, interesting idea. I really tacked on 'fertility rite' as an afterthought, I wasn't really sure what was going on in the context of the dream, I don't think. It just seemed the logical answer, but after listening to you and featherynscale I'm no longer so sure...
