Date: 2004-06-22 04:22 pm (UTC)- Being able to do the things I want to. It seems like a selfish thing, but it's become a premium in my life. What with being an introvert at heart, and a volunteering junkie/pseudo-workaholic on the surface, the ability to decide, on the fly, what I'm going to do, makes me happy.
- 72° days. As previously mentioned, being a Celt means never having to like Summer Solstice. ;) Except this year, of course, when the clouds and rain help immensely (not to mention a hell of a ritual).
- Family of choice. Whether they're blood relatives or not is really immaterial; being able to be myself and not worry, to rely on them, and to understand them, is something I treasure.
- Thunderstorms. Well, happy might not be the right word exactly, but it starts with an h...
- On a related note, sex in general. Sure it can be done poorly, wrongly, or for the wrong reasons, but when it's not, it's a marvel of the universe. And every time is different, which is also rather neat.

Date: 2004-06-22 04:32 pm (UTC)I failed/dropped a couple of courses in college, mostly through being overwhelmed and having terrible time-management/addiction control. I believe they included Introduction to Engineering (which is why I switched; didn't even do the final, the 'pumpkin drop'), Linear Algebra (that was just embarassing), and Music Appreciation (wherein I slept through the final). When I ended up in Sociology/Criminology, though, I hit my stride, and finished the degree requirements in 3 semesters with a final GPA of 3.08 or thereabouts.

Degree
Date: 2004-06-22 07:59 pm (UTC)Re: Degree
Date: 2004-06-22 09:08 pm (UTC)I do regret that decision from time to time (a little bit), but I figure that I have enough skill and education thus far to accomplish pretty much every mathematical thing I *desire* to do in my life, so that's good enough for me. And I truly did love Sociology/Criminology when I got into it, so it's a good trade-off. My high school Calculus teacher (the one who helped three of us design the AP Calculus II course) is a bit more disappointed than I am; I saw him at my 10-year reunion last summer. ;)

Date: 2004-06-22 09:23 pm (UTC)It was cut short through much of elementary and junior high though, and I started letting it get longer in high school. Being an Army Brat, this was not the easiest thing in the world; I remember my father once told me to turn around and bike *back* to the hair salon to get them to cut it shorter (meaning about collar length at the time). On my dime.
Gradually though, I managed to get it longer and longer, at least on top. My senior pictures are a bizarre moment in time when I had my hair *straightened*, having tired of that in-between length when your hair just drives you insane. I had to have it straightened twice by the African-American hairdresser, because she didn't believe me when I told her it would curl back up. The second time, it took, and it also made it manageable enough that I could grow it the rest of the way out without chopping it off.
When I left my
father'sstepmother's house at age 18 years, 1 month, I resolved not to cut it back like I had to before, and got my ear pierced, twice, for spite. One of those took, and still is pierced; the cartillege piercing I got redone several times, but my curly hair won't countenance it, and I finally gave up on it a year or two ago.I grew it out all through the end of high school and into college, then, trimming it back my senior/5th year as I neared graduation. I knew that in practical terms it would be easier for me to get a job if I did not look like a hippie, especially since I was *strongly* considering a job at the police department at that time. When that didn't pan out and I ended up working at a group home for youth, I let it grow again.
I have a memory, either real or mythic, that I cut it back *somewhat* again when I was looking for post-group home work in 2001 and have let it grow out again since then, but I'm not sure if that's real. Actually, since you and
As for "why", well, I'm rather fond of it, and I get (and believe) compliments about it. I was always slender as a child, and having thick glasses and a head like a melon made me even more self-conscious. Paradoxically, long hair helps hide (to my eyes) the relative size of my skull compared to the rest of me. Realistically, I expect that someday I will cut it shorter again, but today is not that day.
Every year I look more and more like Ben Franklin. My hair's not getting longer, it's just sliding backwards off of my head." --Bobcat Goldthwait
