Today's happiness is centered around my ridiculously competent car. Nothing to look at, and a manual transmission to boot which means I'm the only one in my house who likes driving it; but the ability to manage snow and hills that make trucks cry, excellent gas mileage, and improbable hauling capacity, makes me smile. Especially during Snownami 2008...

The pope's beater possesses many of the same qualities and that is one reason why (other than it being cleared of snow and mine not) we took it out to get dinner and groceries.

I do not look forward to clearing my car tomorrow.

Except that mine "burns oil" and leaks coolant. :(

Hey now, my car manages snow just fine as long as she's got a good driver. It's the toboggan Saturn that's skeery.

I think you may be the only one in the house who *can* drive your car, unless K drives stick and I've missed it. If someone's life depended on me driving them to the hospital in your car I could probably manage it, but I'm not sure I could promise that you'd be able to drive it away again.

Good that we're both happy with our respective cars, I reckon :)

I can, in fact, drive a stick. I don't particularly enjoy it, but I can do it.

Yep; you'll notice I said "likes" not "can", and I avoided any talk of Corollas. ;)

Having driven your car, I definitely agree: It's a wonderful vehicle.

As someone looking to buy one at the moment.....

So what model is this wondrous car?

A 1994 Ford Aspire, believe it or not. I kinda lucked out in the "hasn't fallen apart" yet, though (something Fords are fairly fond of), so I'm not sure you should be looking at them yourself.

A small older Subaru, though, might be good...

Well, the Car Talk guys claim that Ford has greatly improved their reliability, though I don't know when that started.

My first car was an '81 Mustang, which I had from around 89-90 until it died in '95. On the other hand, I have zero experience with Subarus.

But if I can't get another Saturn SC2 like my old one (saw one last night except it was a 5-speed, sigh), I'm kinda leaning toward things made by Honda and Toyota (particularly including Acura and Scion). Relatively recent Fords are probably next after that. But I have decided I need to be willing to go into debt to get a car that'll last a bit longer.
