Quest for books
Jul. 6th, 2007 03:07 pmI know, I know, that's ironic coming from my live-in library house, but there's two books I've been trying to get copies of after (un)wisely selling them to a used book store in my youth (in order to get more books, natch).
The first book is, I believe, entitled "Gemini Rising", and may be a 1982 book by that title by the little-known-otherwise J.S. Filbrun. The timeframe is about right, but i can't find cover art or a review anywhere on the Intertubes, just some used copies on Amazon.com that I was directed to via usenet back in 1997... Anybody seen/own this before I buy a copy for $4?
The other one I don't even have a title for anymore; it may have been titled something like "Sword of Damocles", but I think that was only part of the back-cover summary. It takes place on a space station and involves a sabotage plot, near as I can tell. No idea on the author, but it's probably from the same time period, as I believe it was Cold War related (peripherally) and I remember reading it in Manhattan. One of the stand-out facets of the story was the nuclear reactor powering the rotating station; it was placed out on the ring and balanced by the weight of pretty much everything else, so they couldn't cut it loose when it malfunctioned/was sabotaged, or the station would oscillate out of control. Other than that, the salient point I remember was a massage-turned-sex scene in someone's private quarters, where the entire room was hooked up in the 1984 version of 2010's Surround Sound, embedded in the quilted wall studs. No, I don't know why that stuck with me, except that perhaps it was the first sex scene I ever read. Did I mention this is when I was in middle school?
