So I guess that's another chalk mark on the "getting old" meter: I went on my first "diet" today. The metabolism of a 16-year-old has become, if not that of an actual 32-year-old, at least that of someone in their mid-20s. Granted, it's the South Beach diet, so it's more about eating healthily than actually limiting portions and whatnot, but it's a bit of a paradigm shift for me to actually be aware of what I eat. I've always taken "omnivore" as a credo, not just an identifier. This will be paired, of course, with an upswing in exercise, time and energy allowing.

On a not-entirely-but-mostly unrelated note, I noticed my C:\ drive is sitting at about 97% of full today. What do most of you use to eliminate unwanted pounds bytes? Obviously temporary internet files are high on the list, as is the 7.whatever GB Spider-Man 3 trailer on my desktop (which I realized shortly after I left the house, and can be deleted as soon as [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale sees it), but only having about 570MB left is a little unsettling to me. Also, that's just my C:\ drive (mostly programs), not D:\ (documents) or M:\ (music, which has its own problems).

Also and, new icon. Whee!

I figure out which of my games I have not touched in a year and uninstall them.

That's a good strategy. Unfortunately a lot of the games I have, as mentioned below, are older out-of-print things I've gotten copies of online, or the original media I had them on has died/become totally obsolete.

Still, some are like old friends that you have nothing in common with when you finally meet again...

Insightful as always, dear. It wasn't just the old games, but actually some of the newer ones, which were taking up about 5GB. Removing Diablo II, Mafia, and the NWN Expansion Pack freed up enough space until I get that new drive.

I've found for me it is easier to spend the $ on a new hard drive and ghost the contents over, then toss the old drive to somebody that needs it ...

That is, easier than trying to figure out what I can safely get rid of.

Best of luck to ya.

I like it. It's from the Broadway (Gnostic) Church's open-minded "prom", for all the people who couldn't go to prom with their chosen partners in HS. Very cool idea, and we enjoyed the merry hell out of it.

They had a professional photographer on site, since it was in part a fundraiser for the church. VoilĂ !

You downloaded trailers for me? That's so sweet. :) I'll watch it tonight and then you can dump it (or, alternately, you can push it over to my drive and let it trouble you no more).

I might begin the disk-purge by looking at your old-school game collection. I'm not sure I've seen you play any of them of late. Or, as [livejournal.com profile] liquidfun alludes to, storage is super cheap right now, and I have a reasonable solution for drive copying installed...

(Also, I remember when 570M was more than you could get on a drive. [And we had to defrag uphill both ways in the snow! And we had to whittle our own screwdrivers to take the cases apart! And we liked it!!] Dude, we are old.)

I am feeling somewhat better. I would be feeling better still if I had any chewing gum, but I do not. Alas.

The icon is cute, but I look exceedingly rumply therein. Do I really look that rumply?

You're pretty rumply, dear. That day, though, you were more 'ruffly'.

Shall I get you some chewing gum before this evening? Also, it may make sense for you to come pick me up tonight from work, leave my car in the garage overnight, and drop me off in the morning. I'll need it either Tuesday night (if you're fleeing directly to EIR) or Wednesday night for my meeting.

Rumply it is, then. *sigh*

I will be delighted to come and pick you up from work this evening. It saves me from driving around by myself and having random mystical experiences based on what's on the radio. That sort of thing is crazy-making.

Apparently, yes. It has not contributed positively to my experience of the day, although I have not yet had time to work out why.

Anyway, I'm probably here until at least 5:15. I'll give you a call when I can come over.

Also, when does Microcenter give up and die? This thing where you cannot repartition Windows drives, it is annoying to me.

I have read your comment eleventy-two times and I still don't know what you mean. Are you suggesting that we go to MicroCenter and purchase a new hard drive? They are open until 9. Are you suggesting that MicroSoft should give up and die? I don't know that I'd hold my breath on that one. Is it some third thing? I don't know! :-P

Sorry. I meant to ask when Microcenter is closing their doors forever, since you guys said that it had good deals on some supplies.

I think currently I've partitioned about 20GB in C, 22 in D, and 18 in M. Don't remember which one is the old 20GB drive though, and which two are partitions...*scratches head*

From: [identity profile] greektoomey.livejournal.com
C:\ is the old 20GB drive. D:\ and M:\ are the partitions.

How do I know this?

Because a 20GB disk and a 40GB disk is vastly more likely than any other combination. (42-18 or 38-22)

I will send you a 40GB drive if my logic does not reflect reality.
ext_3038: Red Panda with the captain "Oh Hai!" (Default)
From: [identity profile] triadruid.livejournal.com
It's a sucker bet, because I'm not quoting partition size from the screen; it could just as easily be 16GB in C, 20GB in D, and 24GB in M. But your theory is sound: One of them is my OLD 20GB drive, the other two are parts of the newer 40GB I got last year.

That's fine, I'm a sucker. And I'm offering the stake without a match. If I'm wrong, you get the HDD. If I'm correct, you lose nothing.

I'm halfway inclined to order you a new HDD regardless of your partitioning scheme. I've spent more money on your groceries. :P

You can have the satisfaction of knowing you were right. C: was the older 20GB, D/M: are the 40 GB, partitioned.

Several Notes, Not All Of Them Critical

From: [identity profile] greektoomey.livejournal.com
1. Have you eaten many insects, or dung? I am unaccountably curious to what extent you have followed the omnivorous lifestyle. Are you a lacto-ovo-omnivore?

B. I find it highly doubtful that the Spider-Man trailer is 7.x GB, that being the uncompressed size of a dual-layer DVD. Perhaps it is actually 7.x MB?

101. I burn DVDs to alleviate hard-disk fullness. A high-end dual-layer burner will run you about $30, which is about the cost of 20 trustworthy dual-layer disks. (I recommend Verbatim; dual-layer media is notoriously faulty.)

IV. As has been observed already, storage is cheap. To wit: The smallest 3.5" hard drive available now is 40GB, which can be had externally for about $60, or internally for $40. Curiously, the same $40 that will buy you a 40GB internal drive will also buy you an 80GB internal drive, from the same manufacturer and series.

B. Actually, the file was 223MB, not 7GB, but still frickin' huge for being on my C: Drive.

1a. Not much, but I'm not adverse to the possibility if prepared right.

1b. Yes. Also herbivore, carnivore, carnicarnovire, and mycovore.

One more note.

I like your new icon, but I would like it more if I could make out all your faces better.

Is the space above your heads and on the left and right essential for your artistic composition? A slightly more liberal cropping would reduce the necessary shrink percentage and show your lovely family to greater effect.

No, actually. The space above our heads was originally where I was going to put the text, but it didn't work in the Cursive font without having the descenders on "Happy" fall right over my forehead. So I moved the text, and forgot to recrop.

However, if I zoom in too tightly, then I lose the context of the costumes and it becomes hard to tell why I'm wearing an ill-fitting purple smock:

Still thinking it over...

Point the first - burn that madness to cd/dvd, especially the games from yore. That way you have new "original" media that works on reasonably current technology and don't have to figure out how to get a 5.25" floppy to work with XP.

Point the second - I *really* like the family icon. Although I'm with [livejournal.com profile] greektoomey, you need to crop just a wee bit more. Also, there shall be no complaining about descending letters on your forehead when you plastered the text across [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants's bust.

Point the third - Your metabolism has always been a thing of wonder. It's about damn time you started catching up with the "normals". Check out that egg bake recipe I posted a couple of days ago. You might like it & it's customizable limited only by your imagination & kitchen contents.

1. Good point. Actually, the program I found last night (WinDirStat) via LifeHacker showed me that the problem was, of course, my new media. Diablo II, NWN, and Mafia: City of Lost Heaven together took up almost 15GB. So two went away until I get a new drive.

2. I like it too, and I agree that it should be cropped further (see new example). However the problem with letters on my forehead was no so much the intrusion on the people, but that I couldn't find a color I liked that contrasted well with both the brown background and my pink skin. Heh.

3. I saw that recipe, and it'll probably go in the file. Problem is that [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale is not crazy about eggs, so for right now we're reserving those for breakfasts...

My eggy disdain should not limit other people's patterns. If you want to have eggs for dinner, I am perfectly capable of preparing my own meal. Perhaps with eggplant. (I don't do it a lot, but that doesn't mean that I can't.)
