So last night we finally finished watching ([livejournal.com profile] orcjohn's) Firefly on DVD. Excellent series, and it was a damn shame to have seen the film of Serenity first. Would have made MUCH more sense the other way around, but we weren't even really watching the shows we already watched on television at the time, much less add something new and likely to be cancelled.

Then we watched some of the Special Features. The gag reel was predictably worthwhile, for a show which includes all of the "Han Solo" moments that got omitted from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Chracterization and witty banter was the show's strong suit, and the sets were very impressive. Some of the plots were good, others were pretty awful. See icon for a moment from one of the better ones.

Then there was a sort of "Making Of" video, in which Joss Whedon (whose other shows I regularly can't stand) and other creators were talking about it. And he's going on in one bit about how they "intentionally kept the slightly off-center camera angles, the lens flares, the manual zoom", for that rough-and-ready look. To which [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale had to ask - "So which part of all that did you forget by the time the movie came around?" Or was it just the shiny new budget that made him drop the winning style?

We thought the movie was bad before seeing the series. Now, it's somehow worse.

I liked it okay, but it would have made more sense if we'd seen them in the right order.

On the other hand, here's my original movie review:

I watched the Firefly DVD first before I saw Serenity. It made me appreciate the movie so much more. I also think that most of the episodes were very witty and pulled me right in. Only a couple of them (including the train one) really bothered me. Maybe you should re-watch Serenity now?

As far as the camera angles in the movie, it could be the budget or it could be the fact that it needed to be polished enough according to the movie-making big wigs and not necessarily Joss Whedon. That poor guy gets fucked up the ass on a regular basis, I think.

Overall, I loved the idea of a cowboy-space-odyssey type thing. :)

I think the episode that rang worst for me was the one right before the finale - with the Whorehouse on the Prairie? That whole thing was full of abrupt "realizations" (I'm thinking of Inara's reaction to Mal getting laid), and cliche storylines (of course you know the girl is going to die).

Most of the rest, I really liked, though we watched them over a several month period of time.
