David by any other name...

This afternoon, for like the fourteenth time in my life, someone called me by the wrong name. That's not so unusual in and of itself, but it was the same name as I usually get called when this happens!?!

And so, a poll:

I sometimes have to shift between user names and real names, but only if I'm referring to something posted online. As in, oh, triadruid posted the funniest thing today. Who is that, again? Erm . . . oh, yeah, David.

Conversely, I have several students call me Mom, many more call me by another teacher's name, even Mr. Purrington, and once, a girl called me Grandma. Occupational hazard.

Not really. My students are about 13, and my daughters are almost 12 and almost 18. I barely miss a beat, although the Grandma thing made me pause. :-)

Actually that should have read "students who have called me Mom." I don't have any who do it on a regular basis. In fact, they find it very embarrassing. Most of them call me Ms. G. and a couple call me Professor Snape. I've no earthly idea why.

I'm Occasionally caled David or Donald, but mostly that's by family.

There's also a very big distinction between being called Nicole or Nikki. I don't like people taking liberties and calling me Nikki unless I know them very well, and in very friendly ways.

I have that same problem with Debbie vs. Deb. I truly dislike it when people assume that they can call me Deb.

I put "occassionally," but that's not counting people who call me by my old name. As for intentionally wrong or "pet" versions of my name, only certain people get to call me those. And not all of them get to use evey name (e.g., ajs_moppet shouldn't call me "Ya-yo," not that she's ever tried. But gods help anyone other than her who calls me "Lizardbreff.")
