Bosox beat Yankees in Game 7

They came from being down 0-3 to capture the American League pennant in a 4-3 series, not only breaking a record for comebacks but doing it at the expense of their rival (everyone's rival?) NY Yankees. Now they have a chance to win the World Series for the first time in more than 80 years... I can only imagine what [livejournal.com profile] azanthia and other Bostonites' commute in this morning is going to look like.

woot. While I am not a fan of either baseball in general, or the Red Sox in particular (If you must know, all of my baseball sympathies go to the Chicago Cubs), it was terribly exciting to listen to the Boston fans on the radio this morning. The interaction between teams and towns is fascinating to me -- the team becomes a physical manifestation of the city's egregore, fans build shrines to it, and its fortunes on the field become measurements of the city's well-being, omens for the future. These are mighty struggles between godlings, these series. The fact that the game itself is dull like dirt doesn't take away from that.

I'm not a real fan of Baseball either, but I am glad to see the yankees NOT in the world series. My main beef with baseball is that it's every time for itself, and not every team supports the league and the league supports the teams.

The Bosox phenomenon is only rivaled by the possibility that the Houston Astros might be in the World Series at all. I have waited for this day for over thirty years. If they make it, I will have to light a candle for my grandma, who was my baseball buddy. I will become very, very verklempt. Not that I expect it to happen, of course. But still. SQUEEEEEE!

Last time I was a fan of baseball (i.e. actually watching more than 1 inning per season) was in 1985 when the Royals won the World Series. So I am barely even a fair weather fan, but living in RI Boston is the team of choice. The curse of the Bambino and the Red Sox woes are a sports story that sucks you in. The fear of the curse lingers in the air and like a warm smell gets stronger as the days grow colder. Listening to Boston fans sure the team would lose with a 6 run lead in the 7th inning was not unusual, because that is the sort of thing that happens. Winning the pennant and making history at the same time sounds like a prelude to a curse breaking World Series. I have to admit I'll probably follow the series and even watch an inning or two.

I suppose our interests reflect what we 'hear'. On the way in I had heard about the riots in Boston... and was trying to figure out what had set off the anti-globalization nuts again. If it were Denver I might have suspected sports, but BOSTON had a Sports riot?

Which again tears me on Issue one this year. I'd vote for a tax to benefit arts in a heartbeat. But they keep showing the sports stadiums. What the fluck? If these things bring in so much damned money, how come they can't maintain them like every other coorperation has to? SO we raise taxes now to fix their pipes and in another 30 years we get to increase tax AGAIN to fix them or build new stadiums AGAIN. Bah!

The T does not stop for the Sox. It only stops for small, meaningless things like a sock on the rail that will cause a 2 hour delay (not a real example, but it gives you the idea).

I follow the Sox like I follow the weather-- the latter gives me an idea of what to wear, the former lets me predict the mood and general sleep-level of my coworkers :) Very handy.

A friend of mine went out to snap some shots of the rioting (she lives in the Fenway). Here are some shots for you-- not the best quality, but fun all the same :)

Holy cow. Perhaps the curse really has been lifted?

You know what this could mean? It could mean that yet again, The Daily Show has reported on something sooner and perhaps more accurately than any other newscast.

"When news breaks, we fix it."

Thanks for the on-the-spot reporting!

Yeah, I knew you personally didn't have a Bosox fetish (I don't either, truth be told, but I like them better than either the Royals *or* the Yankees). I just remember your stories of when the marathon comes into town and half of everything goes to hell...

Anyway, now I hear that someone died in the police response to the rioting. That's bad enough, but the official response is to ban alcohol in public places during the World Series? What. The. Hell? Ummm, being drunk didn't kill that girl...getting a high-powered paintball in the eye did, apparently.

Because 40,000 people will go to a losing Royals game but 400 people will go to a Scythian Gold exhibit?

We're just the intellectual elites, man. Nothing to be done for it, but get up on a clocktower and start reading Johnathan Swift in a high-powered voice. ;)

Looks like the Astros will have to wait another year, unfortunately. Didn't realize (though I'm not surprised) they'd never been, even with Clemens.

Oh man, I was so bummed. I had Yahoo! Sports set on the 30-second update, and I was just numb.

I was at playoff games 6 and 7 in the Astrodome when they took the Phillies to seven games way back when. If I remember correctly, Kenny Forsch pitched a no-hitter in Game Six. And in Game Seven, J.R. Richard, who was just recovering from his stroke, threw out the first pitch. I still have a baseball from a game when I was 11 that has autographs from Dave Roberts, Larry Dierker, J. R. Richard, Norm Miller, Doug Rader, and my all-time personal favorite Astro, Roger Metzger. (Native of Fredericksburg, TX, #14 with the 'Stros, shortstop, bats switch, throws right, 6 ft. 1 in., 165 lbs. Holds the NL record for 14 triples in a single season, multiple Golden Glove winner.)

Oops, I've moved into full-blown baseball dork mode, haven't I?

That is the dilemna... in order to get more arts for us foo-foo snobs, we have to keep subsidizing the unmaintained stadiums.

I'm not sure why they buck the business model like that. Part of the money you make is supposed to go to keeping your building in shape. Allowing your plumbing to rot out does not make good business sense UNLESS you are a government-subsidized venue.

Grr. Just grr.

Seriously. Subsidies are the main reason I'm not a flaming, dyed-in-the-wool liberal. I think they're stupid and counter-productive.
