So, years ago when most of my visits to the Internet were done through the telnet protocol, there was a MUD called Valhalla that hosted an electronic version of the Highlander: The Card Game*. I was enamored of it beyond reason (okay, some reason... I enjoyed both the original film and the TV series a LOT), and got pretty good at the game, taking 9 or 10 heads as I recall in their ongoing tournament-style play. But the game died out due to being too narrow-focus, I guess, and I never got the chance to play in the real world...this was about 96-97, when Magic: The Gathering (no relation) was huge.

*The game was more-or-less a Magic-style duel, but with sword combat taking the place of (most of) the monster attacks. You could make an attack, your opponent would either play a defense, a Special, or "Exert" through 5 cards of their deck to try to find something to pull their butt out of the fire. Take 15 points of damage and you lose the combat. BUT the bigger danger was if your opponent started whittling you down, your hand got correspondingly smaller and you had less options at your disposal. If they managed to get off a Head Shot that you couldn't block or avoid, they'd take your Quickening (special ability) and your deck is essentially DEAD. There's more to it than that (including some very cheesy stuff in the 2nd Edition), but at its heart it's a card-based swordfight.

Fast forward to this week. A random Google search, or something, leads me to a small ProBoard website about the Highlander CCG. Turns out not ONLY has a new company started to put out a "2nd Edition", but they're essentially based at 31st Century Games in Olathe! I'm at ground-bloody zero of game development, and they play locally in at least two FLGSs, not including tournaments.

I am unreasonably, stupidly excited by this. Anybody else who might want to play?

If it's a collectible game, then no. If it's not a collectible game, then yes. I don't play games where somebody can just buy a better deck.

It is essentially a CCG, but it's a bit flatter than the usual style. The variety of Specials is more limited, and apparently they've taken steps to have at least certain tournaments/gameplays be limited in the amount of cheesy-damage you can do with those Rare/Promo cards.

But your point is taken. I don't usually do CCGs either.

I'll play anything* once.

* Except those German resource management strategy games with the seventy bajillion different kinds of tiny tokens to represent with ultimate realism the seventy bajillion things that go into successfully running a town or whatever, in which there is no luck component and smiling is not allowed. Other than that, I'll play anything once.

I found this almost exactly unlike that sort of game. I mean, you do have a hand of up to 15 cards (more with certain Quickenings), but other than that and some combo-card fiddling, it's fairly straightforward.

Oh! I had no idea such a thing even existed! I was and still am a big fan of both the movies and the series; and I can't help it, I'm always inordinately amused when the Kurgan steals the car, and leans over to the old lady still in the car and says warmly, "Mom." hee!

I would definitely play such a game.
