Finally hit a 'coding peak' last night (and I wasn't even drinking) after several evenings of beating my head against a problem. I really enjoy that moment when all the scales fall away and the underlying structure of the universe becomes clear... (of course, sometimes that structure is made up of tiny little image files, all alike). Guess I'll try tackling some of my other websites today...

In other news, I missed out (AGAIN) on getting to the local Jeff Dunham show (despite what http://onastick.com says, the Springfield show is sold out). I'm not quite ready to drive to Nebraska for him, but I'd really like to see him, Peanut, José and the rest live at some point.

Oh ah. I suppose I should go test it, then. :)

Weelll, it mostly works. I sent you an email. The big thing is that the PayPal thing launches a new tab, which is as it should be. If you just tab back over to the reg form, it's all good, but if you hit "continue shopping", which is a fairly intuitive thing to do from a PayPal form, (e.g. to add your tables), the reg form window re-loads and wipes out your earlier input. It doesn't affect the PayPal stuff, that seems to be stable, but the name and address stuff goes bye-bye, which is annoying.

I didn't complete the test, in case you wanted to see if you could fix that thing later.

Of course! The one button I didn't think to check... (does it reload the reg page in the PayPal tab, or back in the original?)

I'm not sure how to fix that behavior, since the page with that button is auto-generated by PayPal, but I think there's a way to just remove the "Continue Shopping" button, which might be just as good.

Thanks!

You can always come here for the April 5 show. The venue is decent. I've got an extra bedroom.

It reloads the page in the original tab, so it doesn't actually prevent the process from working, just makes it annoying.

I wasn't sure it was something that could be fixed, just wanted to pitch it your way and see what you thought.

This is apparently a known bug with Firefox 2.0 + PayPal. in Internet Exploder, that button returns focus to the tab you were in originally. In Firefox (and probably in both browsers for us, since I hardcoded the vendors.shtml page as the 'shopping_url), it simply reloads the shopping_url, which as you say will wipe out the form.

Hmmm. Another option is to make the PayPal page load in a popup instead of a tab, and then I should be able to disable the Continue Shopping window/remove the shopping_url link.

Feh. I hate it when things only work in Exploder. I would counsel against the pop-up, though, because most of us have pop-up blockers these days, and many people haven't the wit/skill/knowledge necessary to pull a pop-up back out once it's been blocked.

I actually don't know what to do here, except to put a note on the reg page saying "Push the PayPal buttons first, and then make sure you send both forms." or "Don't hit the Continue Shopping button, just tab back to this form" or something. Which is still relying too much on the web-fu of the general public. Feh.

It appears to be likely that the error can be minimized by removing the shopping_url variable entirely; in that case, "Continue Shopping" simply does nothing in Firefox 2.0, which is somewhat better than junking everything you've put in the form. In fact, I've just made that change, can you confirm that this is less crazy in FF? Then it should be possible to put a message into PayPal that says "if you're using Firefox, Continue Shopping will not work; close the tab instead".

I've also found something called FatFreeCart but cannot discover as yet if you can make a form-less link, as his Contact page is inexplicably blocked as Pornography by our office filter.

Clever girl, but that day is already booked in my calendar, and Knoxville is a damn sight farther than either of the previous locations... :(

No, still does the same thing, reloads the form with no info in it.

Bizarre, did you hard-refresh the vendors.shtml page? I just tried it and Continue Shopping, it does nothing.

The yellow thing seems to be related to Google Toolbar wanting to "autofill" those fields; not sure if the image blocking is our firewall here at the office, or something unique to IE...

Hrm. When I open the page in Exploder, it looks normal. No yellow, no red-x. Probably something particular to your network? I'm using IE6.

It's probably our stoopid firewall.
