PArt of my parting from a very devout Lutheran background was the realization that past facts had no place in current doctrine. I didn't like that since the whole reason Lutherans were supposedly doing it better was because Good old Martin posted his Theses on the door of the church explaining how current doctrine had strayed from ancient truth.
I think there was also a point where it occured to me that members of my congregation could have been involved in the holocaust. (Early services were still in German, and it was an older crowd)
