Courtesy of matchgirl42, here's a head's up on another change to the way LJ works:

According to her, http://www.livejournal.com/manage/comments/ no longer allows Basic Accounts to receive email notifications of comments. That would well and truly suck, if true. I'm still paid for another half-year, can somebody else confirm?

::edit:: According to comments below, this may be just a case of transient error, not nefarious purposes. *shrug* Hard to say...

Wait, did you get comments from another basic account? I forgot to mention that she said she was still getting comments emailed, if they were from a Paid (or Plus?) account... it's all very weird.

Where I got that from is, when I checked the Manage Comments page, the last option, "Receive email copies of comments you make," the box has been grayed out. What that says to me is that it's not an option for me at the level my journal is at.

Unless someone can offer an alternative explanation for that, I'd be glad to hear it. Perhaps it's because my journal and thejobfairy are on different servers/quadrants? If I remember correctly, I'm on Filet Mignon.

It is correct that a Basic account cannot check that box. However, being unable to check that box does not prevent you from getting comments emailed to you. Not checking that box means that you don't get *your* comments emailed to you. I have a paid account, and that box is not checked on my account - I did get a copy of your comment emailed to me, but I won't be getting this one.

The other half, I still don't understand. I get email notification of comments that paid and plus members make - both to posts in my journal and comments I make elsewhere. But not from basic accounts. (I say this because I would only realize a comment had been posted by a basic member after I went back to the particular posting.) Why is that????

Unless someone with a basic account wants to test that, they can do so on any post in my journal, feel free.

That wouldn't be email notification of someone commenting in your journal. That means you cannot opt to receive email copies of the comments you make yourself.

As I mentioned below, sometimes LJ has periods of comment epilepsy. Some comments might go through right then, but others could take hours or even days to make it to your inbox. I have no idea what causes it, so I blame the dingoes.

Emailed comment notification drives me fecking NUTS. I hate it with a seething passion, and have it disabled.

In my case, I control how much LJ interferes with my life, my attention, and the clutter in my email. :)

I, on the other hand, want to see my comments. Because I want to read them over again 5-10 minutes later, for editing purposes.

Of course, I've also lost the editing capability with the move to a basic account...but I could still *append* in another comment...

I do believe that notifications of comments *I* make would drive me nuts. However, if I did not get comment notifications from other people, I'd never keep up with any responses I get in other peoples' journals.

I have no knowledge of this one way or the other, but if it's true, LJ's going to have to make some sort of statement about it sooner or later.

I would prefer to think that LJ's just going through another round of comment epilepsy. It does that from time to time.

I have a basic account and am getting e-mail notices about comments from others. It does not send them for comments I place, or comments from other's about my comment on a 3rd party account.
