Today has been a Fractal, Heavy Metal, Devil's Advocate sort of day so far. Thus, icon.

And now, lunch.

Five scientifically plausible ways a zombie apocalypse could actually happen... you know, in case you needed help getting in the mood for Hallowe'en.

Thanks D - and many happy returns of the day to your lovely lady, [livejournal.com profile] rougewench (I used to mistype that as roguewench, today it's "roughwench"...hmmm)

So I guess that's another chalk mark on the "getting old" meter: I went on my first "diet" today. The metabolism of a 16-year-old has become, if not that of an actual 32-year-old, at least that of someone in their mid-20s. Granted, it's the South Beach diet, so it's more about eating healthily than actually limiting portions and whatnot, but it's a bit of a paradigm shift for me to actually be aware of what I eat. I've always taken "omnivore" as a credo, not just an identifier. This will be paired, of course, with an upswing in exercise, time and energy allowing.

On a not-entirely-but-mostly unrelated note, I noticed my C:\ drive is sitting at about 97% of full today. What do most of you use to eliminate unwanted pounds bytes? Obviously temporary internet files are high on the list, as is the 7.whatever GB Spider-Man 3 trailer on my desktop (which I realized shortly after I left the house, and can be deleted as soon as [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale sees it), but only having about 570MB left is a little unsettling to me. Also, that's just my C:\ drive (mostly programs), not D:\ (documents) or M:\ (music, which has its own problems).

Also and, new icon. Whee!

This was fun last time around, so I'll do it again: Anybody who needs an icon is welcome to post an idea here and I'll see if I can come up with something. On the other hand, I seem to have some marked deficiencies in my set:

  • No Star Trek? Plenty of Star Wars, but somehow I missed this one.
  • No Dune!?! I was trying to think of one last night, and ended up with the idea of the gom jabbar/"You might be a human" narrative, but I'm not sure it'll translate well to 100x100.
  • No Whisky/drink icons, I don't think...
  • My brain keeps trying to toss out "I am lost in my own mind"/Sa souvraya niende misain ye, but I have no idea what icon to put with it.
  • Others?

This is my only 'new' one in the last several months, and it's one I was using on a board elsewhere. I've got ~30 slots left. Go!

Stolen from a bunch of people last weekend

Reply to this post, and I will tell you my favorite icon of yours. Then post this to your own journal using your own favorite icon.

~or~

If you don't want to post yet another meme in your own journal, reply to this with your favorite icon of mine and I'll still tell you my favorite of yours.

I prefer the latter option out of a desire to keep track of less threads, but whatever you wish...

Post-apocalyptic...well, no, that might be wrong. It looked more like the Everglades...lush, overgrown, wet. Post-Rapture? )

Also, new icon. Hee!

Still lacking a few icons in my repertoire (pressing issues, I know), and the one I'm getting stumped on is a superhero icon. Who's representative of me? What should it say? Fully-formed icons are wonderful, of course, but I'll take any suggestions, as I'm seriously stumped on this one right now, oh Vast Unpaid Research Department....

Last night's Weird Dream Fairy had something extra special in store for me. I don't really remember the overarching dream (which wasn't really that important, but at some point I won the lottery, or a game show, or something. And not like your usual 'It's a brand new car!' winnings, either; this was monstrously huge, like a castle or a Death Star or something like that. And all I could think of was "Wow....shit. Where am I going to put it?"

Of course, there may have been a hint of foreshadowing there, because when I did pick up my car from the shop this morning, they had fixed the brake cable mounting bracket at no cost. Yay free stuff! (For those who didn't hear see, I backed over a concrete bumper Saturday evening and bent the right rear brake cable mount so that it was Always On™. This led to great consternation and searching about when we came home and discovered that the car was, in fact, smoking. All seems to be well now, though.

And a bit of thought experiment )
Also, new icon.

Because my friends are just the sort of people to still own revolvers, if anyone I know does:

I'm helping redesign the site logo for MafiaScum.net, from this:

to something more like this:

One of the keys to this redesign is to use a revolver instead of a semiautomatic, to reflect the "Gangster era" mentality of the game. But the stock revolvers I can find are all either profile shots or straight on, except for the one I used for my mockup image above. Having access to someone's actual pistol would allow me to calibrate the photo to exactly the best angle for the composition. Using stock photos is important in any case because there may eventually be merchandise sold through the site, which makes any copyrighted image (even GFDL) untenable. Also being able to take my own shots means there will be good enough resolution to do t-shirts, coffe mugs, etc...whatever.

So if someone has a revolver and would let me take some royalty-free pictures that would be fantastic. If you're too far away and/or would rather take the pictures yourself, that'd be good too. Just let me know; otherwise I may just try the profile shots to see how they work...

Icons?

I suspect I need to fill in a couple icon blanks...anyone is welcome to help with this, if they come up with ideas first.

One would encompass the idea of "Yankee" (I've probably got enough cold-weather ones for "Iowegian"); the other would either have to do with being a government drone, and/or a "crime-fighter".

Crankeh!

I was wondering when I'd get an excuse to use my other new icon; unfortunately getting out of bed this morning supplied it. Blech; unfit for human consumption today, which makes sense since I have to be in meetings 2/3 of my day.

In other news, however, the security guard at the Bruce Watkins Center grabbed my arm on the way out the door. Apparently he was very interested in what I was carrying, namely, Book 7 on The Wheel of Time series. He was unsure when Book 11 came out, so we talked for a bit about that. But the key point is that I'm done with Book 6, which officially is the longest in the series, Takes Forever and is madly depressing to boot. You know how The Empire Strikes Back is sort of a downer? Yeah, it's like that, only he keeps his hand (for now).

A couple of things I forgot/had not been mentioned:
  • Dancing a pavane to Elvis' "Fools Rush In", in masks and formal wear, at the wedding;
  • long discussion about the nature of attractiveness and charisma, which was fairly alarming in that "people really think that?" sense;

Also, new icons. This is one of them.

First of all, my shiny new icon comes from [livejournal.com profile] middleguy, by way of the ever clever and sexy [livejournal.com profile] labstar. Two great tastes that go great together (it starts with "Rise, my new apprentice")

Secondly, and only HP fans (and only certain fans at that) will probably think this is funny, but I thought it was bloody hilarious )
