So as most of you have heard, LJ's implemented some crackbrained scheme to leverage suck up to FaceBook and Twitter while making it even easier to violate people's privacy settings. Joy! So if this sparks anybody into wanting to make the jump to http://dreamwidth.org I'd be happy to share an invitation code (assuming you aren't impressed enough to just buy an account outright). Just drop me a comment here or at [personal profile] triadruid. We have [feed profile]  hungoverowls; I'm just saying...

I'm not going to lecture or threaten anybody. We're all adults here; if you weren't, and I found out you'd violated somebody's trust, I'd just be forced to assume you were a very tall, very unaware child.

Whoops. I alluded earlier this morning to a blow for energy independence encounter with a gas pump this morning, but forgot to put up the story for another 45 minutes or so. Cue distressed phone call from partner...

Anyway. What happened was this; finally got all my junk together for work this morning, fed the dogs, scraped the car, and headed north. Snow/sleet had already started by then, but that's actually not relevant to this story, believe it or not. What was relevant was the proximity of the needle on my gas gauge to the "E" side of the equation. So I pulled into the BP up the road, filled up the tank, and scraped more crap off my windshield. Got back in the car to make sure I had cash for parking downtown, listened for the 'click' of the gas pump. Put my wallet away, put my gloves back on, started the car, and drove out of the parking lot. You may have noticed an element missing in this story... )

So that's the story of Me vs. Big Oil.

::edit:: And my training tonight is cancelled - WIKTORY!

Friday evening a mosque in Dayton, Ohio gets attacked with an airborne chemical irritant, and by Monday afternoon there's only four stories about it on Google News?!?

We're doomed.

The evenings that your friend the federal agent doesn't show up for your social gathering on Metcalf is NOT the night to taunt the Hispanic boys for hitting on your fiancée and driving on the sidewalk. Especially if they're carrying...

Ow. Getting shot *hurts*. And welcome to your first OOBE... who says you can't die in your dreams?

I feel like I'm No Fun lately. I'm not sure it's true, and I'm not fishing for compliments; just kinda... worn threadbare.

Yesterday was Action!Packed!
Handfastings! )

Flirting! AIDS! Lightning Storms! )

Dinner! Failure! Dinner? Failure! Dinner and a Show, finally )

All's well that ends well? )

Not my best day. On the other hand, I've had a lot worse.

This morning I stubbed my toe for about the seventeenth time in the last month... both big toenails are now cracked and doing stoopid healing tricks. And then, this morning it spread... not one, but two people within five minutes stumbled or tripped over the ground when they walked past me on my way to City Hall (and no, neither were the usual downtown zombies - the second one was a very pretty young woman in a business suit).

What the hell, kids? I'm not usually a particularly clumsy person, and I *think* I'm getting enough sleep...

::edit:: Aaaand got another one, getting into the elevator at the doctor's office this afternoon. And she was in front of me, so I can't be blamed for 'distracting' this one!

Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] matchgirl42, here's a head's up on another change to the way LJ works:

According to her, http://www.livejournal.com/manage/comments/ no longer allows Basic Accounts to receive email notifications of comments. That would well and truly suck, if true. I'm still paid for another half-year, can somebody else confirm?

::edit:: According to comments below, this may be just a case of transient error, not nefarious purposes. *shrug* Hard to say...

I love that one of the people complaining violently complaining about the "Open Source Boob Project" writes "bad gay fanfiction" about guys. Because that's totally not hypocritical...

So my previous dentist continues to cause me pain and suffering... today was to be my first appointment with Davis Family Dental, a kind and friendly place. Read more... )

So anyway, the short version is, stay the HELL away from Barry Schwartz, DDS.

  1. Konqueror does not work at all with the IE-only mapping software on kcmo.org (this is not a surprise, but I now have confirmation).
  2. Using IE does not necessarily guarantee that the mapping software will work, of course.
  3. May not build a Faraday cage within the City Limits of Kansas City, Missouri.
  4. "Impact Zone", in Zoning terms, apparently means that may be hit by a car/train/bus, since they're all shown in streets and railroad lines.
  5. PBWiki is very clever about many things; however it's a bit too clever about how it adds people to notifications - sorry about that, those who were getting our private wiki's updates. *roll*
  6. There are huge tracts of undeveloped land within the 435 loop that could possibly be had for a song. Eeenteresting....

As mentioned in an earlier post, I'm taking the quasi-legal route of upgrading my tape collection to digital; downloading torrents of the songs off of the Intertubes. However either the tubes have gone a little flat, or my program is a little prickly, or some third thing I haven't thought of. So here's a post for the VURD.

Things started off well... )

So I guess my big questions are:
  • is there a torrent search site that gives the best/most recent trackers?
  • is there a way to see your own share ratio/'score' overall, since that obviously affects seeding privileges? (in Ktorrent, for example, the higher your share ratio the more likely it is to grant you seed privs)
  • Anyone else have the experience of having several Stalled and a few 2.0/Kbps torrents cause the Blagosphere to implode on their home connection, or are we just Speshul?
::edit:: And of course, while I'm posting this, our work servers decide to choke and die... or maybe it's just Mozilla?

This morning was sort of epic in its failure. I'm not entirely sure how you get "sort of epic", but it looks a lot like this in my world... )
I thought yesterday was supposed to be Monday? Yesterday was pretty good, actually, after about 10:05AM...

Anyway. [livejournal.com profile] archway has given me a pick-me-up meme of sorts to do, which I'll probably wrangle after lunchtime.

Musical cues were not so good on the Emergency Indian-Soda-and-Meds run tonight:
  • Led Zeppelin, "Immigrant Song"
  • Meatloaf & Ellen Foley, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"
  • Tool, "Enema"

With all the drama over non-childsafe posts, you'd think they'd have figured out that this post:Cut for length AND adult language ) probably should NOT have made it into their Latest Posts feed, linked to from their home page for non-logged-in visitors to the site. I cached the post just in case it's filtered later, not to spur on drama (I have no idea who this person is).

As [livejournal.com profile] diermuid said yesterday, this is likely a knee-jerk reaction to Protect the Children crusaders, more than a business decision by SixApart's upper management or a "coding initiative" by their trained codemonkeys. But that doesn't mean I have to support or endorse it, or refrain from telling them what a bad idea it was.

However, since my paid account JUST renewed for another year, I'll probably avoid any knee-jerk departures myself, but see what the social networking site landscape looks like in six months or so. I like the functionality of LiveJournal, but the last year and a half or so have shown increasingly irritating/stupid business and corporate decisions. It's too bad their user stats are private now, I wonder what the actual exodus has been...
